For the 4th Annual Jazz Concert to honor Uncle Paul Montgomery, a legendary musician and TV/Radio personality, the featured group will be the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, directed by Jim Ketch. Paul was the original pianist with this big band. Also on the program is the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble both directed by Montgomery’s son-in-law, Gregg Gelb. Kathy Montgomery Gelb, Paul’s daughter, is the vocalist for both the NCJRO and HOCJO.
Highlighting the concert are selections from a historic recording on which the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra played together. After the opening act by TYJE, and sets by HOCJO and NCJRO, the finale will feature selections from the historic “Duke meets Count” recording such as “To You,” “Corner Pocket,” “Take the A train,” “Jumpin at the Woodside,” and “Segue in C” performed by the NCJRO and HOCJO together!
