Spend an evening on Swingin’ Broadway with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra directed by Gregg Gelb. Hum, sing, tap your toes to well-known–and maybe some not-so-well-known tunes from the Broadway stage – from 1925 on.

The concert is Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 at 8pm at the Temple Theatre, 120 Carthage St., Sanford, NC

Brandon Lee, Professor of Jazz Brass at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (UNCG). Received two degrees and an artist diploma from the Juilliard School. In addition to teaching, Brandon has built a reputable career as a performer with many jazz bands in North Carolina and New York City. Most notable bands in NYC are the Christian McBride Big Band, Aaron Diehl and Cecile McLorin Salvant, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Kenny Barron Quintet.

Kathy Gelb, considered one of top jazz vocalists in the Triangle is the daughter of the late great ‘Uncle’ Paul Montgomery, television star and musician. She has sung most of her life and has worked with most of the major visiting and local jazz musicians in North Carolina. For the last 20 years she has been the jazz vocalist with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and was a founding member of the jazz vocalese group, String of Pearls. “… if only bands roamed the land again, Kathy Montgomery Gelb would be a star” Owen Cordle, News and Observer.

Peggy Taphorn, currently in her tenth season as the Producing Artistic Director of the Temple Theatre is an award winning Actress, Director and Choreographer. She spent 22 years based in NYC with 6 Broadway and numerous Off Broadway productions to her credit. Broadway shows include: Broadway and the Tony award winners Me and My Girl, Showboat, Smokey Joe’s Café, and Urinetown.

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, founded by Gregg Gelb, has brought top quality jazz performances to central North Carolina for the past 25 years and is dedicated to presenting, performing and educating audiences in what is recognized as America’s classical and original music – Jazz. He is a well-known and respected musician and composer throughout North Carolina and has distinguished himself as director/conductor of the Jazz at Lincoln Center award-winning student band, the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, a first for this state. The HOCJO is a non-profit organization and it received a grant for this concert from the Lee County Arts Council through the grassroots program of the North Carolina Arts Council
