The Sounds of the Modern Jazz Quartet
The music to be performed in this concert will be music from the world-famous Modern Jazz Quartet performed by the Brandon Mitchell Jazz Quintet and big band music performed by the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra.
Originally from Washington DC, Brandon Mitchell is an active vibraphonist in the North Carolina music scene. After recently completing his master’s degree in jazz studies at North Carolina Central University and a bachelor of arts degree in percussion performance from Elon University, Mitchell has had the opportunity to perform all over the east coast including Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, to name a few. He has toured abroad to Italy several times including performances at the Jazzit Festival, Teatro Piccolo in Milan, and a Notte Bianca performance in front of the Duomo. He has also had the opportunity to perform next some of the greats including Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Jon Metzger and John Fedchock. The music to be performed in this concert will be big band music by the Terry Gibbs Jazz “Dream Band’, Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, and to honor Military veterans, music from the Airmen of Note, plus a new original by Gregg Gelb composed for the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble.
Christian Tamburr is an internationally renowned vibraphonist, pianist, composer and arranger with touring and performances in over 67 countries around the world. Downbeat Magazine recognized him with the “Outstanding Solo Jazz Performance” award and is a 5-Time “Critics Choice Top Rising Star” award recipient on vibraphone.
The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) is part of the Philharmonic Association based in Raleigh, which has grown since 1988 to include three jazz big bands, one beginning jazz lab, three full symphonic orchestras, two string orchestras, and several chamber ensembles, serving 500 young musicians a year. TYJE is a community ensemble for advanced jazz musicians in grades 8 – 12. The students come from the Greater Raleigh, NC region and meet once a week.
TYJE is the first and only North Carolina group to have been selected for the finals of Essentially Ellington. In their first year at the finals in 2016 TYJE earned second place. TYJE has also been a finalist in 2017, 2018 and 2019. TYJE has earned the Outstanding Band Award at the UNC Chapel Hill EE Regional Jazz Festival since 2017. Recent TYJE performances have been for First Night Raleigh, NC Museum of History, Cary Arts Center, Apex Peakfest and they will perform in October at the Duck, NC Jazz Festival. TYJE’s director and conductor is Gregg Gelb.
