Pam Saulsby, who for many years was a news anchor for WRAL-TV, has turned much of her attention to singing jazz. Her repertoire includes songs performed by Ella Fitzgerald. Pam will sing with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, directed by Gregg Gelb, and she will also be the narrator of this concert which pays tribute to the great big band music that was performed and recorded by top American Black Bands of the Swing Era. Tunes by Duke Ellington and Count Basie plus by lesser known leaders such as Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter and Jimmy Lunceford will be performed.

He is from the South Bronx and is of Puerto Rican descent. He learned Latin percussion first when he was a child, and won an audition in percussion to the renowned and famed NY School of Music and Arts. He also studied flute and saxophone and his flute teacher, Hubert Laws, suggested that he not double on percussion or saxophone because of his attractive sound on the flute.
In 1977, he made his recording debut with Ricardo Marrero’s group and he appeared also on a Noel Pointer album. Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, Valentin was the first artist signed to GRP and he has been a popular attraction ever since. Valentin has recorded over 18 albums, combining the influence of pop, R&B, and Brazilian music with Latin and smooth jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. In 2000, he appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54, performing with Tito Puente. Since the mid-2000s, Valentin has been signed to HighNote Records. In addition to his group Caribbean project winning the Latin Jazz Grammy in 2003, he won a Grammy nomination in 1985 and in 2006 was a finalist in the Latin Grammy’s Best Latin Jazz Album category for HighNote’s “World on a String.” Valentin developed the unusual techniques that feature slapping the keys so it sounds like a percussion instrument and singing into the flute while playing, generating a totally unique sound and generating harmonies from a single flute. These techniques, and more, are all on display on his 2011 CD, “PURE IMAGINATION,” which is currently #5 on the charts.
