Here are some photos of our recent guest artists presentations. The HOC regularly reaches out to the community. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Choir of Sanford, directed by Rev. Iris Jordan has performed Big Band Gospel music arr. by Gregg Gelb, and also the Sacred Music of Duke Ellington in performances with the HOCJO. In Oct, 2008 we had international jazz artist and CW Post university Jazz Professor, TK Blue, for a concert and two outreach clinics, one at Ingram Elementary School and one at the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County.
Additionally, the HOCJO has a Jazz Apprenticeship program. With assistance from to Lee County Arts Council we are able to offer young musicians a paid opportunity to play with the Band! In January, 2010, we will begin searching for our next apprentice(‘s). Last year we had two; Katie Smith on Bari sax and Caleb Laverack on guitar. This year we are searching for a student jazz vocalist.
In conjunction with the Nov. 6, 2009 Latin Jazz Concert that featured four Latin American Guest Artists we also gave a free open rehearsal at Carolina Meadows and a free Latin Big Band concert for the Latino Big Band Concert at St. Stephens Church of Sanford.
Bill Falconer, former treasurer and pianist with the HOCJO, writing about about some of our activities, “I remember someone donating a keyboard and it getting to a smiling kid in a photograph – an award or a raffle? Then there’s the new apprentice program. There’s the Wynton curriculum that HOC placed in schools. There are a number of bands who keep jazz “alive” through performances aimed at the “they’re playing our kind of music” older crowd. I think HOC does more than most in outreach to schoolkids, particularly African-American youth who may otherwise receive little exposure to their predecessors who created this great American art form – from Louis Armstrong on and on. “
From Joy Downes, music teacher and HOC board member, “I wish everyone could see how fantastic the jazz programs have been at Ingram. There are no words to say how much my students have enjoyed the programs!! If any of you would ever like to visit my school (and play/sing for my students) or just watch Gregg & artists in action, you are all invited!!! Gregg & Paul Kelly are coming to Ingram again on April 16. They will also be going to Bullock and Edwards Elementary the week before the 4/17-18 programs. THANK YOU, GREGG and the HOCJ Orchestra!“
